The quantity is either a vector or a scalar. These two categories can be distinguished from one another by their distinct definitions ; Scalars are quantities that are fully described by  a magnitude {or a numerical value} alone.Vectors are quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction. You can tell if a quantity is a vector by whether or not it has a direction associated with it .Example; Speed is a scalar quantity but velocity is vector that specifies both direction as well as magnitude.
